About

An ESL teacher and learning designer, since 2001.

Liudmila Zhuk, Ph.D. in Education. My work connects language teaching, independent learning, and the thoughtful use of technology.

Liudmila Zhuk

I began teaching English in 2001 and spent seventeen years at two universities, including training future language teachers. Since 2023, my work has focused on adult learners in the United States: English for work, everyday life, and citizenship interviews.

I began teaching in 2001 at the Baltic University of Foreign Languages and Intercultural Cooperation in St. Petersburg, and from 2003 I was on the faculty of Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic (Associate Professor from 2007) — teaching theoretical grammar, methodology, stylistics, the history of the English language, and British history & culture, and training the next generation of English teachers. Alongside the teaching came thirty-plus academic publications, eight years co-running a Moodle LMS, faculty-development workshops on ICT integration (2011–2017), and the St. Petersburg Government Prize for scientific and pedagogical achievement (2010).

My interest in technology grew out of a teaching question: how can practice between classes become part of a coherent learning process? That question shaped my 2006 doctoral research and later work with a Moodle learning platform. Documenting my teaching principles now helps me use AI for preparation while keeping the pedagogical decisions explicit.

Today I teach individually, in pairs, and in small groups. I also develop ESL_Master to connect lesson goals, spaced review, and evidence of progress. I choose the content, review the generated materials, and adapt the work to the learner.

One line
Teaching, research, and learning technology.

How my work developed.

2001

Where it begins

MA in teaching foreign languages, summa cum laude — and my first years in the classroom. The interest in how a language is learned — not just taught — starts here.

2006

A dissertation about autonomy and technology

My doctoral research examined how internet technologies could support students' independent language learning. That interest continues to shape my teaching.

2003–2018

Fifteen years at Polytechnic

Associate Professor (from 2007) at Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University — fifteen of seventeen years in higher education. Over 1,000 students taught, all levels; faculty workshops on ICT integration (2011–2017); eight years co-running a Moodle LMS (2010–2018).

2018–2022

Moving, and learning a new system

Relocation to California, experience in K–8 classrooms, and Communication Studies coursework.

2023–2026

Building ESL_Master

Teaching adult learners and developing ESL_Master: connected lessons, independent practice, spaced review, and teacher-led assessment.
